Career Trajectory & Contribution
Alexandre Tiedtke Quintanilha is one of Portugal’s most distinguished and visionary scientists. After completing his PhD in Physics at the University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, 1972), he spent nearly two decades at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), leading research centers at the intersection of biophysics, environmental sciences, and applied energy.
In the early 1990s, he joined the University of Porto as Full Professor at ICBAS. His work pioneered the integration of physics, cellular physiology, and membrane bioenergetics, focusing on oxidative stress and cellular response mechanisms.
He founded and served as the first Director of IBMC, chaired INEB, and presided over the founding board that created the i3S consortium. Beyond the laboratory, he served the nation as Member of Parliament and Chair of the Parliamentary Committee for Education and Science (2015–2024), receiving the Grand Officer rank of the Military Order of Saint James of the Sword.
