Career Trajectory & Contribution
Mário Barbosa is a global pioneer in biomaterials and regenerative bioengineering. After graduating in Metallurgical Engineering from FEUP (1972) and completing his PhD at the University of Leeds (UK, 1980), he became Emeritus Full Professor at ICBAS, University of Porto.
His groundbreaking research unlocked key mechanisms in cell-biomaterial communication and immunomodulation, utilizing controlled inflammation to stimulate tissue regeneration and novel drug-delivery platforms. He authored over 310 papers with ~15,000 citations (h-index 67).
He was a founding member and President of INEB and directed the landmark initiative that created the i3S consortium, serving as its inaugural Director (2015–2019). His honors include the George Winter Award (2001), the Klaas de Groot Award (2020), Honorary Membership of the European Society for Biomaterials (ESB), the National Scientific Merit Medal, and the Gold Medal of the City of Porto.
