Manuel Sobrinho-Simões is one of the world’s most celebrated oncological pathologists. Emeritus Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP), he founded and directed IPATIMUP, elevating it into an internationally renowned powerhouse for molecular pathology and cancer diagnosis.
His scientific output reshaped the understanding of thyroid and gastric carcinogenesis, establishing critical criteria for histological and molecular diagnosis, prognostic staging, and targeted treatment selection. He co-authored multiple editions of the definitive World Health Organization (WHO) Blue Books on Endocrine Pathology.
In 2015, The Pathologist magazine named him the most influential pathologist worldwide. He served as President of the European Society of Pathology (ESP) and was awarded Portugal’s highest civilian honors, including the Grand Cross of the Order of Prince Henry, the Grand Cross of the Military Order of Saint James of the Sword, and the 2002 Pessoa Prize.
